The Girl Effect - the solution?
The Girl Effect is a non-profit organisation funded by Nike and NoVo Foundation with key collaborations with the United Nations Foundation and Coalition for Adolescent Girls.
Three years ago the Girl Effect was created. Its aim is to "get powerful people to talk about girls." Their project was off to a powerful start when in 2009 at the World Economic Forum, their work was recognised by world leaders, business leaders and thinkers began taking part and an interest in this movement.
It formed to enable women to voice their opinions and "to end poverty for themselves". They share the issue with world so that other people can assist in this movement and change the course of history. "And who doesn't want to sock ignorance in the mouth?" They believe that women are the answer to solving the poverty problem. This is because through their research they have found, an educated girl will invest 90% of her future income in her family, compared to 35% for a boy. Yet, 250 million adolescent girls live in poverty and are more likely than boys to be uneducated, married at a young age, and exposed to HIV/AIDS as well. However, the Girl Effect, although focuses on women, assists all in need.
The Girl Effect campaign does not only take its received donations to the people in area's where they assist, but is effective in assisting other organisations as well. The Girl Effect is in partnership with GlobalGiving Foundation. This Foundation creates projects that assist developing areas and give money in aid with the projects. Therefore, when donating, an option is given to either a group of girl-foucsed projects or a specific project of your choice.
Along with any other campaign, it is often questioned. If there goals are realistic, if the organisation is actually working and if the money actually goes to the right place are all liable questions. The goals of The Girl Effect organisation is high. By 2030, they want 50 million of the 250 million adolescent girls who live in poverty, out of it. This is a major task and their ideas of the effect their organisation will have seems a little far fetched. They state in their videos that an empowered woman can get a job, This accumulation of achievements may not be realistic, however, is still a possibility and their organisation will have a positive impact in society as promised.
